E-mail from the edge, Travels to Norway

July 9, 2010

We just got to Norway, 48 hours later!  We left home at 6:30 a.m. on
July 6 for Salt Lake – 4 hour layover – caught plane to Portland.  Left for
Amsterdam at 1:30 p.m. (9 1/2 hour flight).  2 1/2 hours from Amsterdam
plane lost cabin pressure so had to fly @ a lower altitude which uses more
gas.  Circled around east of Greenland waiting for a decision on what
options there were – wanted to fly to Detroit but not enough fuel to get
there so landed at Goose Bay in Labrador, Canada (a military base).  When
we landed there there were rescue vehicles surrounding the plane!  Went
through customs and were bussed to barracks for 4 hours of sleep. A plane
was going to be dispatched from Minneapolis but there was no crew available
so one came from Atlanta.  At 3:00 (home time) the plane arrived with
crew members but by the time the 298 passengers were sent through security
and what not the new crew had expired their allotted time allowed to fly so
at 5:30 p.m. (after sitting on the plane for 5 hours) the original crew
from the A330 was able to fly us to Amsterdam in our original plane.
Another 5 hours back to Amsterdam where we got vouchers for food and some
compensation we got on a plane for Kristiansand where we arrived today,
July 8, 48 hours after starting our flight.  Quite an adventure.

We`re at the brother’s now where we’ll sleep for the night.  His father
does not know if he’ll go to summer house or not because he thinks it may be too
